Jack-o'-lantern
A Jack-o'-lantern is a carved pumpkin.
A face is carved into the pumpkin and a candle is put inside.
This makes the face "glow" at night.
Most Jack-o'-lanterns are scary faces!
In the past, only scary faces were carved.
People believed that the scary face would keep evil spirits away.
But now, people carve funny faces also.
Look at Obama!
Now people carve anything into a pumpkin!

Who made the first Jack-o'-lantern?
A long time ago there was a man called Jack.
He was a very bad man.
One day, He met the Devil!
The Devil said "You are a bad man! I will take you to hell now!"
Jack was very smart.
He said "Please, Let me have one drink before we go to hell"
The Devil said "OK"
They went to the bar and Jack ordered a beer.
Jack drank the beer.
Then the Devil said "OK now I will take you to hell!"
Jack said "Wait, you must pay for the beer"
But the Devil had no money.
Jack said to the Devil "Make yourself into a coin. Then I can pay"
The Devil agreed and made himself into a coin.
Jack put the coin into his pocket.
In his pocket, there was also a holy cross.
Next to the holy cross, the Devil lost all of his powers.
Devil cried "Please Jack, Let me go!"
Jack said "I will let you go if you promise never to take me to hell"
The devil agreed.
Jack lived a long life but finally, he died.
He was a bad man so he could not go to heaven.
And the Devil could not take him to hell.
So Jack stayed on the Earth.
Jack wandered here and there.
He met the devil again.
The Devil asked Jack "How are things going Jack?"
Jack said "I am not happy. I must wander here and there and at night it is very dark!"
The Devil was kind to Jack.
He gave Jack a small piece of hell`s fire that would burn forever.
The Devil said "Now you have a light. You can see at night."
Jack put the fire into a pumpkin.
He carried this pumpkin everywhere and used it as a lantern.
People saw him and called him "Jack of the Lantern"

We can see many things everyday.
